Report: Barcelona ready to sell Arsenal target Memphis Depay for just £1.7m

Arsenal have been linked with a move to sign Memphis Depay in January, and Barcelona are reportedly willing to let him go for a bargain fee.

Mikel Arteta’s side suffered a huge blow earlier this week after Gabriel Jesus had to undergo surgery on his knee. He’ll be out for a while now, which makes Arsenal’s attack considerably weaker.

The Gunners boss is being urged by many to dive into the transfer market for a replacement. Could Depay be the one?

Barcelona ready to sell Arsenal target Memphis Depay for just £1.7m

Spanish outlet Sport revealed a couple of weeks ago that Arsenal are interested in signing Depay from Barcelona.

The Gunners’ London rivals, Tottenham and Chelsea, are also said to be keen to sign the Dutchman, who has impressed in the World Cup in Qatar over the last two weeks.

However, if Sport‘s latest update is to be believed, Jose Mourinho’s AS Roma have joined the race. The Italian outfit has begun talks to sign Depay, but they want him either on loan until the end of the season or on a free transfer.

Depay’s current contract expires next summer, which means the January transfer window is Barcelona’s last chance to make some money by selling him.

The Catalans intend to do just that and have named their demands to let him go – just £1.7 million. That would be an absolute bargain.

Arsenal are currently on top of the Premier League table – five points clear of defending champions Manchester City.

Although unlikely, this is the Gunners’ best chance of winning the Premier League title, but with Jesus – who has arguably been their best player – unavailable for the next few months, their hopes have been seriously dented.

If Arsenal really want to go all the way, they have to bring in a top-quality striker. Depay, branded as world-class by Bruno Genesio, could well be that man, and the fact that he’s available for just £1.7 million makes him a risk-free option as well.

It will be interesting to see what will happen with both Arsenal and Depay in the January transfer window.
