Report: Club prepared to sell Manchester City target; he's won two Champions League titles
Barcelona are prepared to let Sergi Roberto leave this summer, amid reported interest from Manchester City and Pep Guardiola.
Mundo Deportivo claim that Roberto is on the list of players Barca are willing to let go. The Catalan giants are looking to reshape their squad, after backing Ronald Koeman in recent weeks.
Spanish publication Sport has claimed this week that Barcelona are interested in landing Aymeric Laporte from City. In turn, they claim that the Catalan club could be willing to throw Roberto in to help the deal.
Roberto, 29, is said to be admired by Pep Guardiola. He’s been with Barcelona for some time now, winning six league titles and two Champions League trophies while with the La Liga giants.
The Spaniard’s ability to play a number of positions is appealing. While being a midfielder by trade, Roberto can also play right-back.
And with City playing an ever-fluid formation, that could work for Guardiola.
It remains to be seen if City will sell Laporte. However, it is clear Barcelona don’t mind Roberto leaving. Whether that be in a swap, or just a straight move to Manchester, could be down to Guardiola.
Sergi Roberto to Manchester City only makes sense if Pep loses players
Surely Guardiola isn’t going to be pushing the boat out to land a 29-year-old bit-part player? The City boss is quick to move his players on when they get too old anyway. Signing Roberto, then, seems odd.
Obviously, if he was thrown in as part of a deal for Laporte, then that might work. But even then, City would be moving on a world-class defender for little in return.
Roberto has been a good servant for Barcelona. But City need better quality if they’re to win the Champions League. For now, then, this seems like a deal they’re best avoiding.
