Report: Barcelona contacted Leeds over Rodrigo loan

Barcelona made contact with Leeds United during the final hours of the transfer window over a potential loan move for Rodrigo, according to a report from The Athletic.

Rodrigo has not had the easiest time since arriving at Elland Road. Leeds broke their club record to sign him for £27 million last summer.

He has definitely shown more than a few glimpses of his quality. He scored seven times in the Premier League last season.

But his performances in the early stages of this campaign have probably summed up his time well. There is definitely a sense that Leeds fans have not yet seen the best of the 30-year-old – despite his best efforts.

So it is interesting to hear that Barca made a last-ditch attempt to sign Rodrigo before the summer window shut.

According to The Athletic, Leeds were contacted about a potential loan. It is noted that the Whites were never open to temporarily letting their marquee signing leave.

There were also little time left to find a replacement. Rodrigo meanwhile, had made it clear that he was ready to stay.

Barcelona loan would have never been right for Leeds, but Rodrigo definitely has point to prove

Leeds did let a big-money signing leave on loan on deadline day. Helder Costa joined Valencia for the season.

However, Costa’s move looks to be best for all sides. The winger never managed to prove that he was on the same level as Raphinha and Jack Harrison.

Had Rodrigo left however, it would have gone down incredibly poorly. Admittedly, fans want a lot more from the forward.

But that is only because he has proved just how devastating he can be.

His challenge now is to show exactly why Barcelona did make contact as the deadline loomed. And why Leeds had no interest in a deal.
