Report: Atletico want Arsenal loanee Lucas Torreira to stay

Atletico Madrid are not considering terminating Lucas Torreira’s loan, with Marca reporting that they expect the Arsenal loanee to play an important role for the club this season.

Torreira has endured a frustrating time in the Spanish capital. The 24-year-old has made just two starts in La Liga, while he has appeared five times from the bench.

His lack of game-time prompted speculation about his immediate future. As reported by AS, a number of clubs in Spain and Italy have submitted enquiries to Arsenal about the Uruguay international.

However, it appears that Atleti have no interest in ending Torreira’s loan prematurely. According to Marca, they are not contemplating letting him leave this month.

It is claimed that Atletico believe that the midfielder will become more important as the season continues.

TBR View: Torreira’s struggles may leave Arsenal in tricky position

It will be interesting to see what Arsenal make of Torreira’s situation, particularly if they are keen on selling him this summer.

His lack of minutes will do little for his valuation. As reported by BBC Sport, Arsenal paid £26 million to sign him in 2018. Meanwhile, Spotrac shows that he earns £75,000-a-week.

It will be harder to attract significant bids in the summer should he remain on the periphery of Diego Simeone’s squad.

Having said that, it could stand Torreira in good stead if he is able to fight his way into Atletico’s side on a more regular basis from here. So it may not be an easy decision for Arsenal.
