Report: Atletico Madrid's coaches want Sergio Reguilon to go back to Tottenham

According to Estadio Deportivo, Tottenham Hotspur loanee Sergio Reguilon has failed to impress Atletico Madrid’s coaches over the last few months.

The 25-year-old Spaniard joined the Rojiblancos on a season-long loan deal in the summer. Antonio Conte just didn’t want him at Spurs, and a move away made perfect sense.

However, things just haven’t gone to plan.

Atletico Madrid’s coaches want Sergio Reguilon to go back to Tottenham

When Reguilon joined Atletico Madrid on loan in the summer, the Spanish club’s fans weren’t too pleased.

The 25-year-old’s past connections to Real Madrid didn’t go down well with Atleti supporters, but the Tottenham man was determined to win them over with his quality on the pitch.

However, an injury has limited him to just 21 minutes of football all season. That’s not enough at all, and Atletico Madrid’s coaches now want him gone.

The report claims that the coaching staff at Atleti have informed their board to consider terminating Reguilon’s loan deal in the January transfer window.

They want him to go back to Tottenham, but it has been suggested that Spurs would be unwilling to take him back as Atleti have already agreed to pay his full wages until the end of the season.

Reguilon’s Tottenham contract expires in the summer of 2025.

TBR View:

Reguilon is a decent left-back, and he showed his quality for Spurs in his first season at the club. However, he just doesn’t fit into Conte’s system.

The Italian prefers wing-backs in his squad, and although Reguilon’s strength lies in the attacking third, he just doesn’t have the right balance to perform the way Conte wants.

It will be interesting to see what will happen after the World Cup.

Diego Simeone may well change his mind and decide to keep hold of Reguilon, but if they want him gone, discussions with Tottenham will definitely not be easy.
