The Sun have claimed that Atletico Madrid are set to ignore Arsenal’s interest in midfielder Thomas Partey, as Diego Simeone looks to use the Ghanaian star as bait to land a Liverpool player this summer.
Partey, 26, has been strongly linked with a £45million move to The Emirates this summer as Mikel Arteta scours the market for a midfielder that can add some steel in the middle of the park. Partey’s Champions League displays have caught the eye.
However, such a transfer is expensive and the Gunners may fail to meet his asking price – certainly, Atletico are not confident. Indeed, the La Liga side want Liverpool’s Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and are willing to use Partey to land the ex-Arsenal man.
Oxlade-Chamberlain, 26, has been in and out of Liverpool’s side this season, scoring seven goals in 34 outings. It is believed Liverpool are unwilling to listen to offers for the England ace, and Jurgen Klopp sees him as a crucial part of his side.
TBR’s view – Liverpool really need to ignore Atleti swap
Partey is a top, top player. But in the holding midfield area, Liverpool are well stocked. Fabinho has been excellent since his move to the Premier League, while Jordan Henderson and James Milner are both capable of playing in that role.
Partey, then, is unneeded at Liverpool and certainly would not start. Oxlade-Chamberlain, meanwhile, is crucial to Liverpool given he is more than capable of getting forward from Liverpool’s midfield and finding the back of the net.
With Gini Wijnaldum’s future in doubt given his contract ends in 2021, Liverpool need to keep Oxlade-Chamberlain at all costs.
