Report: Atletico Madrid interested in Aston Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez
Oblak has long been considered one of, if not the best goalkeeper in the world. And he has been an amazing servant for Atleti, winning a raft of honours with the club.
But his time at Metropolitano Stadium may be coming towards an end. His contract with Diego Simeone’s men expires at the end of the campaign.
They are prepared to sell him in January if it appears that they are set to lose him on a free in the summer. And with that, they are considering potential replacements.
And one player Simeone really likes is Martinez, according to a report from the Sunday Mirror (25/9; page 75).
Understandably, the report notes that Steven Gerrard does not want to lose Martinez. However, the chance to play in the Champions League may appeal to the Argentinian.
Atletico Madrid interested in Emi Martinez
Martinez has been an inspired signing for the Villans. Of course, he arrived with a point to prove after seemingly losing the number one spot back to Bernd Leno at Arsenal.
But he has most definitely proved that point. Matty Cash has previously described his teammate as ‘unbelievable‘. And there is no question that the Villans have got real value for their £17 million spend.
Villa are in a difficult position right now. They have not kicked on in the way that many expected them to. And Gerrard was facing questions about his future from the outside world before the international break.
Martinez is clearly ambitious. He is now first-choice for his country. And he probably feels that he has to make up for lost time after spending much of his time at Arsenal out on loan.
So it would surely be difficult to turn down the chance to play for Atleti if Simeone comes calling.
