Report: Atalanta decided against £35m Nuno Tavares move
Atalanta have decided against making a move for Nuno Tavares after talks, with Arsenal demanding £35 million for the left-back, according to a report from the Daily Express.
Tavares’ future looks uncertain after a mixed first season at the Emirates. At times, he looked superb, stepping up and producing some good performances in Kieran Tierney’s absence.
However, there were also times when he really struggled. And it seemed that he was not quite ready for that role given just how important Tierney is to the Gunners when available.
Arsenal have looked at signing other left-backs this summer. Reports claimed that they wanted to sign Aaron Hickey and were close to sealing a deal.
And with that, Tavares leaving has become a possibility. Atalanta are interested in signing the 22-year-old. But Arsenal have no interest in letting the Portuguese leave on the cheap.
The Daily Express reports that the Gunners want £35 million for Tavares. And thus, Atalanta have decided to back away from trying to sign the defender.
Atalanta decided against Tavares move
It is no surprise that the Serie A side have backed away from making a move.
He has been ‘brilliant‘ at times. But he is some way from the finished article. Of course, one of the most notable incidents concerning Tavares involved him being substituted early on in the FA Cup defeat to Nottingham Forest.
It is extremely optimistic – at this stage – for Arsenal to demand so much for Tavares. But it also probably highlights how Mikel Arteta would be more than happy to hold onto the youngster next year.
Arsenal have the Europa League to look forward to. That competition should present Tavares with a fantastic opportunity to grow and develop.
There may well be a time when Arsenal can demand £35 million, or more, for Tavares. But it is probably no shock that Atalanta do not see the value right now.
