Report: Aston Villa willing to offload midfielder signed by Steve Bruce

The Express & Star has claimed that Aston Villa are willing to wave goodbye to midfielder Birkir Bjarnason this summer, if an offer is to the newly-promoted Premier League side’s liking.

Bjarnason, 31, has managed just 54 appearances for Villa since joining the club two and a half years ago in January 2017 for a fee of £2.5million (Birmingham Mail) from Swiss side FC Basel.

A number of injuries have prevented the Iceland international from becoming a regular at Villa Park, with the left footer being used in a number of positions as cover. He has played centrally, at left-back and left wing.

Following the club’s promotion to the Premier League, Dean Smith has brought in a whole host of players – including central midfielders Douglas Luiz and Marvelous Nakamba. It pushes Bjarnason down the pecking order.

It is now claimed that Villa will let the Iceland ace leave, after he entered the final 12 months of his contract. Lovre Kalinic and Scott Hogan are considered in a similar boast to Bjarnason.

TBR’s view – Bjarnason unlucky at Villa, but right to let him go

Unfortunately, Bjarnason’s injury woes have prevented him from getting any steam up and when given the chance – a lack of momentum has seen him fail to hit the heights Steve Bruce had expected when signing him.

Despite his misfortune, it is the right decision to wave goodbye to Bjarnason this summer, with Villa bringing in players who are far ahead in terms of quality – and a lot younger.
