Belgian outlet HLN have claimed that Aston Villa will have to pay French side Stade Reims £9million to sign defender Bjorn Engels this summer, amid reports they are in advanced talks.
French newspaper L’Equipe broke the news about the 24-year-old on Thursday, claiming the newly-promoted side are in advanced talks to land the uncapped Belgian – despite only just putting pen to paper with Reims.
Signed on a season-long loan by the Ligue 1 club last summer, former Olympiacos and Club Brugge colossus Engels agreed a permanent switch earlier on in the current window. Now, Villa are looking to swoop in.
The Midlands outfit have already signed three centre-backs in Kortney Hause, Tyrone Mings and Ezri Konsa. Club captain James Chester also remains at Villa, but Engels could make it five options at centre-back.
The latest report claims Villa must part with £9million to land Engels, who is a renowned Arsenal fan and has been linked with a move to the Emirates in the past.
TBR’s view – Engels a bargain for Villa at £9m
Engels broke through at Club Brugge and was considered one of the best centre-backs in European football at his age. It has not quite worked out like that, but he is still an excellent defender.
Strong in the air, comfortable with the ball and intelligent enough to play in holding midfield, Engels has enormous ability and plenty of years left ahead of him in professional football at 24.
So, for just £9million, Villa are landing a bargain in Engels.
