Report: Aston Villa want to sign Borussia Dortmund star
Italian newspaper TuttoSport claim that Aston Villa are one of a number of clubs looking at signing Borussia Dortmund midfielder Axel Witsel.
Witsel, 32, is out of contract at Dortmund in June 2022. It has seen Dortmund decide to offload him, requesting a bargain £4.25million.
The report states that Juventus have made important steps in the last few days to lure the experienced Belgian to The Old Lady.
But Juventus are not the only club interested. The report from Tutto Sport says that Jose Mourinho’s Roma and Aston Villa are also looking at Witsel.
The report makes it clear that Dortmund will only accept a permanent sale, not a loan. Juve are favourites, having almost signed Witsel in 2016.
Witsel to Juventus, Roma or Villa: Would he bolster Dean Smith’s side?
Without a doubt. While Witsel has struggled with injury in the past couple of seasons, and is now 32, he is still an incredible holding midfielder.
He has done it all. Not only is he well-experienced at club level, with trophies at Dortmund, Zenit, Benfica and Liege – but he is a Belgium regular.
Clocking up an enormous 114 caps for Belgium, Witsel is a bargain at £4million even despite his age and injury issues. Villa need a midfielder.
Douglas Luiz is superb, while John McGinn is a favourite. But Marvelous Nakamba is probably not the player Villa had hoped he would be.
So, at £4million, Villa could do a lot worse than signing Witsel. His bargain price tag makes up for what is likely to be some pretty high wages.
