Aston Villa want to sign another striker and Rio Ave striker Mehdi Taremi is being reported by Sky Sports as a potential target.

An Iran international, he is enjoying a decent season in the Portuguese top-flight following a summer switch from Qatari outfit Al Gharafa.

This season Taremi has scored nine goals and registered five assists for the team in seventh in the Primeira Liga.

The all-action striker is lethal in the penalty area and has a goal record of 15 goals in 38 games on the international stage.

A 27-year-old, Taremi would be Villa’s second striker addition this window. On Monday evening the club signed Mbwana Samatta from Genk (Official Website).

Villa’s need for a striker has been intensified in recent weeks. Wesley’s knee injury has ruled him out for the season and the club languishes in the relegation zone.

Manager Dean Smith clearly doesn’t want to be left short should Samatta break down and appears to be targeting another striker.

Smith won’t want an immediate return to the Championship and January could make or break.

Tameri has only played for six months at Rio Ave and the rest of his career has been spent in the Middle East.

With Samatta unproven too, it would represent a massive risk to have two strikers in his squad who have zero Premier League experience.
