Aston Villa have identified a new centre-back to target. According to The Daily Mail, Brentford starlet Ezri Konsa is on Aston Villa’s wishlist ahead of the summer.
The Villans have already signed Tyrone Mings and Kortney Hause this summer. But they want one more centre-back to compete with Mings, Hause and James Chester.
Adam Webster is rated at £30m by Bristol City so Smith is now considering Konsa. The 21-year-old starred for Brentford last season and could make his move to the Premier League.
Brentford have prepared for Konsa’s potential exit by signing Pontus Jansson from Leeds and Ethan Pinnock from Barnsley. Has this opened the door for Aston Villa to do business?
Dean Smith rates Ezri Konsa
Smith signed Konsa from Charlton Athletic last summer when he was Brentford manager. And he rates the England U21 centre-back very highly, describing his potential as “unlimited”.
After signing Konsa, Smith told Brentford’s official website: “It is a really exciting signing for us because of his age, potential and attitude. He has played a lot of games at League One level and his potential is unlimited.”
Ezri Konsa: Short and long-term solution
While Konsa cannot offer Premier League experience, he has already played a number of games in his short career in the lower leagues. After earning just under 100 appearances at Charlton, he made the switch to West London, playing 47 games for Brentford in 2018/19.
Konsa might not be an immediate starter for Aston Villa with Mings, Chester and Hause also vying for spots. But he could become a top player in the near future and this is definitely worth the gamble by Smith.
