Aston Villa’s quest to land Brentford striker Ollie Watkins looks set to end in success, with The Sun reporting that the Villans are prepared to offer their target a £70,000-a-week contract.

Watkins has been linked with a move away from the Bees for some time. He scored 26 goals in the Championship last season.

The Sun reports that Villa and Fulham are battling for the 24-year-old’s signature. However, it is suggested that Dean Smith’s side could be getting closer to a deal.

Interestingly, the report does not suggest that a bid has been accepted. But it is stated that their plan is set to pay off – seemingly suggesting that Villa are expected to secure the forward’s signature.

TBR View: Huge boost after quiet start to Villa’s window

It would be little surprise if there were some twists to come before Watkins’s future is resolved. But if the report is accurate, it would be a big boost for Smith’s side.

They need to make improvements to the squad after narrowly avoiding relegation last season. And yet, they are yet to make an addition to their first-team squad this summer.

Watkins is a player who will improve their options in every position across the forward line. It would therefore, be a fantastic statement if Villa can win the race with their lucrative offer.
