Aston Villa are planning to make a seven-figure bid for Reading midfielder John Swift, with Birmingham Live reporting that Dean Smith’s side are set to outbid Sheffield United for the 25-year-old.
Swift enjoyed another outstanding season in the Championship last term. The Englishman scored six goals and contributed 10 assists for the Royals.

Unsurprisingly, Reading are facing a battle to keep the former Chelsea man. And it appears that the chances of holding onto Swift may be about to become much slimmer.
Birmingham Live reports that the Villans are ready to confirm their interest with a bid. The offer is said to be worth £6-£8 million.

And interestingly, Birmingham Live notes that it is set to be higher than what the Blades have offered for Swift.
It remains to be seen how Reading will respond. But perhaps it should be no surprise if Villa’s opening offer is knocked back.
Swift looks to be crucial to the side’s success. And while they may be aware that they face a tough task keeping him, they will surely have no intention of letting him leave for anything less than their asking price.
Villa’s first bid may not be enough to get a deal done. But it is still a potential statement of intent from Smith’s side.
