Report: Aston Villa rejected as Jesse Joronen set to complete Brescia move

Sky Italy journalist Gianluca Di Marzio has claimed that Aston Villa have lost out to Serie B champions Brescia in pursuit of FC Copenhagen goalkeeper Jesse Joronen.

Joronen, 26, starred for FC Copenhagen last season, clocking up 38 league and cup appearances for the Danish champions – conceding just 33 goals in keeping 16 clean sheets.

Villa are interested in signing a goalkeeper this summer, with Lovre Kalinic expected to leave. Jed Steer starred during the second half of the season and the play-offs, but he is not considered the long-term answer.

Now, it appears Villa had made a move to sign 6ft 5in colossus Joronen, who has seven Finland caps. But they have been stopped in their tracks by newly-promoted Serie A side Brescia. They are set to sign Joronen for £4.5million.

TBR’s view – Joronen no improvement on Villa star Steer

There is no doubt that Aston Villa need a new goalkeeper and at £4.5million, Joronen is a bargain for the Midlands club if they can resurrect a late deal and beat Brescia to his signature.

But Joronen has next-to-no experience at the highest level, though he has played seven times for Fulham – in which he conceded 14 goals. He would be a risk, and Villa need a proven Premier League goalkeeper they can trust.

The club are reportedly closing in on a move to land Burnley stopper Tom Heaton, and the England international is certainly the better option compared to Joronen.
