The Telegraph have claimed that Aston Villa are set to trigger the £18million release clause in Brentford striker Ollie Watkins’ contract, which will see the striker form a reunion with Villa boss Dean Smith.
Watkins has been in sensational form for Brentford during the past 12 months, since being moulded into a striker. The 24-year-old has scored 26 goals in 50 games, forming one third of the Championship’s most-feared attack.
However, Brentford’s Premier League dream came crashing down on Tuesday night as Fulham secured an extra-time win over the Cottagers. It means Watkins will have to leave if he is to play in the top tier.
Crystal Palace and Sheffield United are also keen on Watkins, who was signed by Smith from Exeter for Brentford. The £18million clause is now active, with Brentford remaining in the Championship and Villa are ready to trigger it.
TBR’s view – Watkins would be a sensational Villa signing
Not only because Watkins has proved he is an excellent striker and is good in all areas – in the air, with the ball at his feet, boasting plenty of pace and of course, he is versatile – but because Villa desperately need a striker.
Wesley struggled, Mbwana Samatta did okay but he is hardly the long-term answer. Watkins can be and under former manager Smith at Villa, he can be a sensational signing for the Midlands ace.
