Bjorn Engels is one of the players that Aston Villa are open to selling this summer, according to a report from the Daily Mail.

The Villans are continuing their preparations for their second campaign back in the top flight. They have brought in Matty Cash and Ollie Watkins in recent days.

But it appears that Dean Smith also has his eye on clearing out a number of fringe players before the transfer deadline passes.

The Daily Mail names seven players who the Villans would be open to selling this summer. Along with Engels, the club would also be willing to move on Mbwana Samatta, Marvelous Nakamba, Frederic Guilbert, Lovre Kalinic, Orjan Nyland, and Scott Hogan.

TBR View: Villa right to consider offers for Engels

It was a mixed first season for Engels. He seemed to start the campaign extremely well and looked the part alongside Tyrone Mings.

However, his form seemed to tail off quite dramatically. And he ended the season having only made 15 starts in the Premier League. He also struggled with injury during his time at Villa Park.

The report does not suggest that Villa are actively trying to sell the named players. Admittedly, they will obviously work harder to move some on than others.

But it is surely the right decision to leave the door open for Engels to potentially leave. He cost around £9 million (according to Sky Sports). And they may perhaps welcome the chance to recoup that sort of money.

But should he stick around, it would arguably not be a bad outcome either. He is potentially going to struggle to win back a starting spot. But it must not be forgotten that he did show glimpses of real quality following his switch.
