Aston Villa have opened talks with Matt Targett over a new contract with the Villans, according to a report from The Athletic.
Like several of his teammates, Targett has enjoyed a considerably better second year at Villa Park. The 25-year-old has been outstanding for Dean Smith’s side.

The Athletic reports that Targett has just over two years on his contract. But Villa plan to reward to his form with an extension and a pay-rise.
As noted in the report, Villa have extended the contracts of a number of key players this term. So it is no surprise that Targett may become the latest to put pen to paper on a new deal.

Some may have had their doubts about whether Villa made a mistake signing Targett from Southampton following their promotion to the Premier League.
He had struggled to establish himself as a first-team regular at St Mary’s. So spending £14 million appeared to be a gamble.
However, his form this season has vindicated that decision emphatically.
And ensuring that Targett – who earns £35,000-a-week, according to Spotrac – is tied down for what should be the best years of his career would be another impressive statement.
Villa have been superb on the pitch for the large majority of this season. But they deserve huge credit for being so proactive off the field also.
