Report: Aston Villa midfielder Marvelous Nakamba eyed by new Newcastle United owners

Will Butcher

The Zimbabwean Herald claim that Newcastle United’s new owners are looking at signing Aston Villa midfielder Marvelous Nakamba in January.

Nakamba, 27, has fallen down the pecking order at Villa following his move in 2019 – joining Villa for £11million (Sky Sports) from Club Brugge.

He clocked up 50 outings for Villa in his first two seasons, but this term, he has only played seven times. He has managed just two league starts.

A 23-time international, Nakamba is a combative holding midfielder – renowned for his passing and tackling. He also has a superb engine.

But having dropped down the pecking order at Villa, Newcastle are looking to take advantage. The Herald say The Toon’s new owners are keen.

Nakamba to Newcastle: Villa ace an underwhelming signing for Toon

Newcastle have all the riches in the world but a move for Nakamba would not see them improve their current side. He is a good player, but not great.

The fact he is struggling to get into Aston Villa’s side is proof that Newcastle, with the enormous wealth they now have, can do a whole lot better.

Yes, Newcastle do need bodies in the middle of the park. They need fighters, and Nakamba is certainly that. But he does not improve Newcastle.

However, if a loan deal could be orchestrated, then perhaps Nakamba’s engine might just give the Toon the tools to steer away from the drop.

TransferMarkt claim he is represented by the same agency that looks after Jonjo Shelvey and Javi Manquillo – and that could help a deal.
