Aston Villa boss Dean Smith is reportedly fighting for his position in charge ahead of the upcoming fixture against Chelsea this weekend.

Villa host Chelsea on Saturday evening in the Premier League and go into the contest fresh off the back of a 4-0 hammering away defeat to Leicester City on Monday night.

According to the Telegraph, Smith’s position as the club’s manager is now under threat and there is growing pressure on him.

The report explains that a heavy loss at the weekend at home to Chelsea could leave the club’s chiefs with “serious doubt” about whether or not he should keep his job.

Villa do sit 19th in the league table at present with 10 games remaining in their season and are in a tough relegation scrap with a group of other teams.

The Midlands club find themselves two points away from safety in the table, but they are currently on a worrying five-game losing run across all competitions.

They statistically have the worst defensive record in the top-flight with most goals conceded (56) and drastically need to improve to keep their status in England’s main league.

TBR’s View:

Smith has done miracles since he walked into the job October 2018, as he took Villa from mid-table in the Championship to play-off winners in the same season.

It’s been a tough ride back in the Premier League for the club, but they did enjoy a day out at Wembley in the 2-1 Carabao Cup final defeat to Manchester City recently.

The 48-year-old boyhood Villa fan has been brilliant for the club, but whether he’s the man to dig them out of trouble remains to be seen.

It would be an extremely risky move to bring in a new manager so late in the season and the instant response that managers can get at a new club isn’t guaranteed.

If Smith’s job is indeed hanging in the balance going into the weekend, Chelsea aren’t an ideal opponent considering they hammered Everton 4-0 at the weekend and also beat Liverpool recently in the FA Cup.
