Aston Villa are believed to have made informal enquiries about Graham Potter as they search for their next manager, according to a report from the Express and Star.
Villa appear to be potentially moving into the home straight in their search for Dean Smith’s successor. The Express and Star reports that a formal approach for Steven Gerrard is imminent.

Talks are reportedly set to be held in the next 48 hours. So it would certainly appear that the Rangers boss is in pole position to take the post – should he want it.
But obviously, he is not the only name that Villa have looked at. According to the Express and Star, informal enquiries are thought to have been made for Potter.

The report does note that the Brighton boss leaving his job for the Villans looks unlikely.
Potter appointment would have been exciting move from Aston Villa
Potter has been lauded for the work he has done at the Amex Stadium. They did struggle last season. But that largely seemed to be down to their inability in front of goal to make the most of their impressive performances.
The Seagulls started the campaign in fine form this time around. They could have gone top of the table after six games had they beaten Crystal Palace.
Brighton now sit seventh in the table. And Potter’s stock remains high. Certainly, the club’s supporters would be forgiven for being concerned about how long they can keep him for.
But it would appear that a move to Villa is unlikely this time around – despite the club seemingly asking the question.
