Report: Aston Villa join West Ham and Slaven Bilic in race for striker

West London Sport have claimed Aston Villa are also interested in signing FC Basel striker Albian Ajeti this summer, after an initial report claimed West Ham United and West Bromwich Albion wanted the Swiss ace.

Swiss outlet Blick reported earlier this week that West Ham were considering an offer worth £8.5million for the 22-year-old goal machine, he netted 21 times in all competitions for Basel last season.

The report claimed West Ham were debating whether to make the offer despite bringing in Sebastian Haller. However, they may find competition from Championship side West Brom – managed by ex-boss Slaven Bilic.

Now, the latest report claims Aston Villa have joined the race after Dean Smith’s side lost out to Brighton in the race for Neal Maupay. The Frenchman has chosen the Seagulls over Villa, joining Brighton for £20million.

TBR’s view – Ajeti an ideal back-up at Villa to Wesley

Villa have brought in Wesley Moraes from Club Brugge and he is expected to lead the line. But back-up to Wesley is questionable, with the club’s current options being Keinan Davis and Jonathan Kodjia.

Ivory Coast international Kodjia has been somewhat average at Villa since joining Bristol City, but there are doubts whether he can make the step up to the Premier League. Davis is still unproven.

At £8.5million, then, Switzerland international Ajeti is a bargain and gives Villa much-needed fire power.
