Italian newspaper Il Messaggero have claimed that Aston Villa have joined Serie A side Cagliari in the race to sign AS Roma striker Gregoire Defrel, who is surplus to requirements at the Stadio Olimpico.
Defrel, 28, has returned to Roma after a decent season-long loan at Sampdoria, where he scored 12 goals in 39 league and cup outings – only 28 of which were from the start.
The French striker joined Roma on loan in the summer of 2017 before the loan was automatically made permanent as per the details of the deal a year ago. He managed just one goal in 20 outings for Roma.
He cost the 2018 Champions League semi-finalists a whopping £20.5million (ESPN), and Roma are already looking to move on. They know they are likely to have to take a loss on the former Parma and Cesena striker.
TBR’s view – Defrel needs a pat on the back, Villa can provide that
Defrel is one of those strikers that excels if he is backed by confidence and the support of a good fanbase. But he struggles if that confidence in his services drops.
He certainly boasts the quality to rival new signing Wesley for a place up top, and can also offer cover out wide and in the 10 role. A couple of early goals and Villa fans will take to him.
Last season’s form at Sampdoria was a major improvement after his career had hit a standstill since his big-money move to Roma. Now, he needs to get his career back on track, and Villa could be the place to do that.
