Aston Villa are being linked with a surprise move for Brighton full-back Ezequiel Schelotto.

According to a report from Tuttomercatoweb, the Midlands club are considering a move for the one-time Italy international, who is also being tracked by Serie A outfit Cagliari.

Schelotto, 30, joined the Seagulls in the summer of 2017 for around £2.75 million (BBC Sport), and has made 28 appearances for the club, only five of which has come this season.

Last term, he was loaned out to Chievo Verona which was ruined after he ruptured knee ligaments.

With his contract running down, there is an opportunity for clubs to snap Schelotto up for a cut-price fee, or on a free transfer in six months.

TBR’s view – Villa move would be bizarre

Villa being linked with Schelotto is definitely a strange one.

Dean Smith has two options in the form of Frederic Guilbert and Ahmed Elmohamady, and both can do a job.

They are by no means the greatest players, but Schelotto certainly wouldn’t be an upgrade on either man.

Given his lack of game time since signing for Brighton, any move by Villa for Schelotto would be rightfully questioned by supporters.
