The Telegraph have claimed that Aston Villa have finally had an £8.5million bid accepted for Burnley goalkeeper Tom Heaton, and are now ‘set to sign’ the England international.

Heaton, 33, has been linked with a move to Villa Park all summer as the newly-promoted side look to bring in a new goalkeeper in a bid to boost their chances of Premier League survival. The offer was accepted on Tuesday night.

Villa had also been considering Stoke City’s Jack Butland but it appears the Championship side wanted too much for his services, while Cardiff City’s Neil Etheridge was also considered by Dean Smith.

But it appears that Villa are now set to end their pursuit of a new stopper with a move for Heaton, who is in the final 12 months of his contract at Turf Moor after spending six years with Sean Dyche’s side.

It is believed the fee will be £8million up front, and include £500,000 in add-ons.

TBR’s view – Heaton ideal for Villa at £8.5m

Heaton is one of the most underrated goalkeepers in the Premier League. So at £8.5million, Heaton is certainly a bargain despite the goalkeeper being 33 years of age.

The former Manchester United and Cardiff City stopper still has three years at the top level if last season’s form was to go by. But the move is a blow for Jed Steer, who had done little wrong up until now.

The move to sign Heaton is likely to see Lovre Kalinic leave the club, and Norway international Orjan Nyland could follow him.
