Report: Aston Villa face wages stumbling block for Sergio Romero

Aston Villa have recently been linked with a move for Manchester United goalkeeper Sergio Romero amid reports he could be leaving Old Trafford this summer.

The Red Devils are set to give Dean Henderson a chance as the club’s second-choice option, which means Romero is on the hunt for a new home.

As reported by the Daily Star, Aston Villa are looking at Romero to replace Pepe Reina, who has joined Lazio following his loan spell from AC Milan.

Goalkeeper has been a problem position for Aston Villa in recent times with Tom Heaton struggling with injury since his arrival last summer and the likes of Orjan Nyland and Lovre Kalinic failing to meet expectations.

However, a move for Romero appears to be in jeopardy, according to a report from The Sun.

They claim that Aston Villa’s interest in the player is likely to stumble over his current wages.

The Sun has previously reported that Romero is on £70,000-a-week at Old Trafford and it would appear that Aston Villa are not willing to match those figures.

Romero has 96 caps for the Argentine national team but has featured in just seven Premier League games for Manchester United since arriving in 2015, mostly playing in cup matches and Europe.

So he would have been a great recruit for Aston Villa. However, with his wages seemingly a stumbling block, Dean Smith’s side will likely need to look elsewhere to bring in a new goalkeeper.
