Aston Villa are expected to offer a new contract to Douglas Luiz as they continue to work their way through tying down key members of Dean Smith’s squad, according to a report from the Express and Star.

The 22-year-old has been pivotal to Villa’s fortunes this term. He has been hugely impressive in middle of the park, making 25 appearances in the Premier League.

According to Transfermarkt, he is under contract until 2023. But it appears that Villa hope to extend those terms in the near future.

The Express and Star reports that the Brazil international is expected to be offered a new contract.

The report notes that the likes of Jack Grealish, John McGinn, Tyrone Mings and Ezri Konsa have all signed new deals this season.

So it would be another fantastic move to extend Douglas Luiz’s contract. It is almost frightening to think of the level he could reach given that he does not turn 23 until next month.

Villa have put together a fantastic core of players.

And should they agree an extension with Douglas Luiz – who is currently on around £33,000-a-week, according to Spotrac – the large majority of the first-choice spine of Smith’s side will have committed their futures to the club this season.

And given the progress they have made in the last 12 months, there is now every reason to believe that they have built the platform to kick on from once again in the coming months.
