Aston Villa are reportedly consider Middlesbrough goalkeeper Darren Randolph as a potential target.

According to the Telegraph, the Midlands club are considering the 32-year-old shot-stopper.

The report details Dean Smith’s side have already held talks for Burnley goalkeeper Tom Heaton, while they are also eyeing Southampton’s Alex McCarthy.

Villa have been extremely busy so far in the summer transfer window and seem intent on straightening their squad ahead of a Premier League return.

They are back in the top-flight after promotion last season and it seems like Smith wants a new option in net.

Jed Steer helped the club earn promotion via the play-offs, but Boro’s Randolph has been named as the latest goalkeeper target.

TBR’s View:

Randolph is a decent goalkeeper with 38 senior international caps for Republic of Ireland and is still their number one option.

He kept 19 clean sheets in the Championship last season for Boro, albeit he had some disappointing individual displays against Villa.

The Irishman has had a brief taste of Premier League football in his career, but most of his successor has come in the second-tier.

Villa would be better off giving Steer a chance next season than signing Randolph, but that’s a different case if they manage to add someone of Heaton’s quality.
