Celtic will reportedly send scouts to watch Omar Elabdellaoui in action on Tuesday night but they face competition from England.
Aston Villa and Leicester City are among the clubs also keen on Celtic target Elabdellaoui, according to The Daily Mail. The Olympiacos right-back is also wanted by Bournemouth, Burnley, Leicester City and Watford.
Elabdellaoui is a long-term Celtic target. He was seen as a like-for-like replacement for Mikael Lustig in the summer. However, this move failed to materialise.
Celtic signed Hatem Abd Elhamed and Moritz Bauer instead. While both have proven their ability, Elhamed has been injury-prone and Bauer is only on a season-long loan.
Elabdellaoui will become a free agent next summer when his Olympiacos contract expires. Celtic scouts will watch the Norway international in action against Romania on Tuesday night as they maintain their interest in the defender.
But former Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers could scupper those plans. Leicester are also in the hunt for the 27-year-old, who can sign a pre-contract agreement from the start of 2020. Aston Villa and three other Premier League clubs also make Celtic’s task harder.
If Bauer leaves and Elhamed cannot stay fit, Neil Lennon needs to decide whether Elabdellaoui would be the right option. Alternatively, he could promote Jeremie Frimpong, who already looks like a first-team player.
Aston Villa have Frederic Guilbert playing well at right-back but Elabdellaoui could replace Ahmed Elmohamady to provide cover. He has some prior experience in England with Hull City so he could be a good option for any of these English clubs.
