Aston Villa are reportedly one of the clubs interested in signing Florian Thauvin from French top-flight side Marseille.
According to Tuttomercatoweb, Italian club Atalanta have been in pursuit of the attacker’s signature and have held discussions with Marseille about him.
It is understood that English duo Villa and Leicester City have now entered the race late for the 27-year-old and want to bring him back to the Premier League, after his previous spell with Newcastle United.
The report explains that Marseille want £13.5million for his signature and Atalanta are yet to match that, while Villa’s issue is that Thauvin’s preference would be able to join a Champions League club.
Thauvin missed the majority of the 2019/20 season with a serious ankle injury, but showed his potential in the previous campaign for Marseille.
The left-footed Frenchman usually plays as a right-winger cutting inside and was a real force in the 2018/19 campaign, scoring 18 goals and supplying nine assists in return across all competitions.
It didn’t quite work out for him at Newcastle with his brief stint St James’ Park, but there is no doubt he’s someone with individual quality and on his day a major attacking threat.
Despite his lack of football in the last 12 months, Thauvin looks a potential steal at £13.5million and Villa should do everything they can to try prize him away from Marseille.
Dean Smith’s side had an obvious problem in the goalscoring department last season with Jack Grealish the only man to hit double figures, but Thauvin may be a good solution to that and be a useful option on the right flank.
The skilful wide man should certainly feel like he’s got unfinished business in England and he would be a real positive signing for Villa.
