According to the Daily Star, Aston Villa are close to agreeing a deal with free agent Gary Cahill.

The 33-year-old defender recently became a free agent following the expiry of his contract with Chelsea. The former Blues captain is now looking for a new club after seven trophy-laden years at Stamford Bridge.

The veteran no longer has it in him to feature regularly for a title-chasing side. However, he still has plenty to offer in the Premier League. His experience, quality and leadership should make him an interesting prospect for many top flight clubs to consider.

Newly-promoted Aston Villa are currently leading the chase for the 61-cap ex-England international’s signature. Dean Smith will be keen to give his side an injection of extra Premier League experience ahead of the new campaign.

Not only would Cahill be a calming, authoritative presence in the Villans’ backline, he could also be a key figure in the dressing room at Villa Park. The opportunity to work with former Blues centre-back partner John Terry, now assistant manager at Villa, may also tempt Cahill to the Midlands club.

Ahead of their return to the top flight, the arrival of Cahill would be quite the coup for Villa.
