The race is hotting up for free agent Yoann Barbet. According to Turkish media outlet Asistanaliz, Aston Villa, Wolves and Besiktas are locked in a three-horse race for Barbet.

Aston Villa have just won promotion to the Premier League and are hoping to strengthen their options. But they face competition from West Midlands rivals Wolves, who could sign another defender this summer.

Both have identified Barbet as a bargain addition. The 26-year-old can play at centre-back or as a left-back, making him a useful versatile option on a free transfer.

Barbet has spent the past four years in England since his 2015 move to Brentford. With over 100 appearances to his name, he is experienced in the Championship and looks ready to step up.

The French defender knows Aston Villa manager Dean Smith well from their time together at Brentford. Smith is fully aware of Barbet’s ability and could swoop to sign him on a free transfer.

TBR’s view

On a free transfer, Barbet is a low-risk signing who could bulk out the defensive ranks of either Aston Villa or Wolves.

Aston Villa won promotion to the Premier League with Kortney Hause, Tyrone Mings and Axel Tuanzebe, who were all on loan. And with Tommy Elphick and Alan Hutton being released, the Villans have limited options at the back.

Smith knows exactly what Barbet can offer and he would provide strength in depth. Offering cover at left-back and centre-back, he could also help Wolves.

Nuno Espirito Santo needs to add depth to his squad for the Europa League campaign. Barbet is a ball-playing left-footed centre-back; he is perfect for Nuno’s system.

Besiktas will also put their name in the hat. But Barbet would surely prefer to stay in England and test himself in the Premier League.
