Report: Arteta now expected to keep two players at Arsenal for next season rather than sell them

Both Calum Chambers and Cedric Soares are now expected to stay with Arsenal, according to Football London.

Arsenal are set to sign a right-back this summer, with Hector Bellerin likely to depart.

However, it is thought that Chambers and Cedric will still stick around to offer cover for Mikel Arteta’s side in the position.

Sensible move?

If either start regularly for Arsenal next season that would be a surprise, but the logic behind keeping both is understandable.

Chambers and Cedric have both proven to be solid squad options this season.

Chambers can cover at both right-back and centre-back and actually seemed to be preferred by Arteta over Bellerin towards the end of last campaign.

Cedric, meanwhile, is comfortable in both full-back positions, although Arteta did seem reluctant to use him at left-back with any regularity last term.

There are question marks over both their abilities to start permanently at the Emirates Stadium.

But while Arteta rebuilds Arsenal’s squad the pair’s versatility could be important to ensure that the Gunners have enough squad depth.
