Arsenal are ready to consider transfer offers for Calum Chambers this month, according to reports.
The Daily Star is suggesting that Mikel Arteta is ready for a defensive shake-up in January, with Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Shkodran Mustafi set to follow William Saliba and Sead Kolasinac in leaving the club this month.
But Chambers is seemingly also considered surplus to requirements at The Emirates.
The report states that Arsenal are ‘willing’ to let Chambers go, although it is not as active a search for a transfer exit as Arsenal have pursued with Sokratis, Kolasinac and Mustafi.
Instead, it appears that Arsenal would consider letting Chambers leave if the right offer came in that allowed Mikel Arteta some more funds to improve the team.
Chambers has been dogged by injuries in recent times. The 25-year-old only returned from a long-term knee injury at the start of December at which time Arteta spoke warmly of the three-cap England international.
“He’s also a fantastic character,” Arteta told Football.London last month. “He went through the injury in an incredible way, everyone that’s involved with him during the rehab, during training, says incredible things about him.
“He’s such a nice guy, a great character to have around, and is a player we can utilise in different positions which is really helpful as well for any squad. We want to have him back and I think he’s very close.”
The £16 million signing from Southampton has never truly established himself as a first-team regular at Arsenal, previously spending spells on loan at both Middlesbrough and Fulham. On each occasion Chambers found himself relegated from the Premier League.
The versatile defensive option is yet to feature in a matchday Premier League squad this season and now he is back to fitness it appears Arsenal could be ready to cut their losses on his Arsenal career.
