Report: Arsenal were all set to loan out 'exceptional' player this summer before Arteta changed his mind

Arsenal were planning to send Marquinhos out on loan straight after his summer arrival but his pre-season impressed Mikel Arteta.

As per the Evening Standard, that meant that Arteta and the club changed their plans for the Brazilian wideman for the coming season.

Marquinhos has had to be patient and wait for his debut in an Arsenal shirt but it came against FC Zurich in the Europa League last night.

He took his chance impressively, opening the scoring with a clinical finish before setting up Eddie Nketiah’s winning goal.

Arsenal planned to loan Marquinhos out

Arsenal loaned out Nicolas Pepe near the end of the transfer window, sending him back to Ligue 1 with Nice, where he links up with former Gunners man Aaron Ramsey.

They targeted Pedro Neto to come in and battle Bukayo Saka for a spot on the right wing but they were not able to get him.

On deadline day, the focus switched to a new central midfielder, amid injuries suffered by Thomas Partey and Mo Elneny in the engine room.

Reiss Nelson will hope to benefit from that lack of a new winger, but Marquinhos also looks set to be a big winner from that state of affairs.

The Europa League should continue to offer a platform for him to impress Arteta and push for minutes in league matches.

The Gunners boss recently said of the Brazilian, per Arsenal.com: “I’m very happy with him. He has adapted very well and he’s a really likeable figure in the dressing room and around Colney.

“His language is not great yet but I think his physicality has been pretty exceptional.

“For someone who has come from Brazil and has a different way to train and play, but he’s done it. I think he’s got the qualities for how we want to play.

“We will keep him here for another few months and make sure that he establishes himself at the club and in the team. Afterwards, we’ll see what the best movement is for his career.”
