Spanish newspaper Marca have claimed that Arsenal remain interested in Villarreal defender Pau Torres – but are some way behind Real Madrid in pursuit of Unai Emery’s most-prized possession.
Torres, 23, has emerged through the ranks at Villarreal and after an impressive loan spell with Malaga – the seven-time Spain international has become a regular under Emery. So much so, he is now a starter for Spain.
But it is his centre-back partner in the Spain side that is likely to have the biggest say on his future. Arsenal are keen, but Sergio Ramos’ future at Real Madrid could dictate whether Zinedine Zidane moves for Torres.
The report states that Torres prefers a move to Real Madrid and that Madrid will move if Ramos does not renew his contract at Real – with the current deal expiring in the summer. But Arsenal are keeping tabs on the situation.

TBR’s view – £45million release clause makes Torres a bargain
Though he has only played 101 times at senior level for both Villarreal and Malaga, Torres is a bargain if clubs activate his release clause. Marca state that it is worth €50million, or £45million.
The Gunners are hardly lacking in options at centre-back, with Rob Holding and Pablo Mari forming a decent partnership while summer signing Gabriel is also impressing. But they could lose three in the summer.
David Luiz, Sokratis and Shkodran Mustafi all see their contracts expire in the summer and bringing another player in is crucial. Torres would take Arsenal to the next level, but Real remain in pole position.
