Report: Arsenal want to sign Sevilla’s Diego Carlos ahead of Liverpool and Manchester City

According to a report from The Telegraph, Arsenal are now firmly in the hunt to sign Sevilla defender, Diego Carlos.

The Gunners are scouring the market for additions to help Mikel Arteta compete for the top four next season. The Spanish manager has done himself no harm in terms of getting backing, after winning the FA Cup yesterday.

And it seems that the Gunners boss is looking to strengthen the ranks in defence, with Sevilla star Carlos identified as a priority target, according to the report.

Signing the Brazilian would be a massive boost for Arteta, giving him a proven and solid central defender who, at 27, should be entering the prime years of his career.

Furthermore, it would also see them land Carlos ahead of the likes of Man City and Liverpool. England’s top two clubs have been credited with an interest in the Brazilian, with AS claiming just last week that City was still in the hunt despite landing Nathan Ake.

Arteta, then, would surely love to get another one over Pep Guardiola after he knocked him out of the FA Cup a few weeks back.

We saw a few seasons ago with Liverpool how adding one or two brilliant players in key areas can solve so much. With Diego Carlos, you get the impression it might be a similar case if Arsenal were to land him.

The defender has speed, power, reads the game well, and is an almost ever-present, meaning injuries shouldn’t be an issue.

The only problem could be money. Carlos has apparently got a £68m release clause. That, of course, could well pose the Gunners a few issues if the Spanish side won’t lower their asking price.
