Report: Arsenal want to sign World Cup star who's just about to take on Cristiano Ronaldo tomorrow
Arsenal are considering a bid to sign Eintracht Frankfurt star Djibril Sow, according to Bild. The midfielder is currently playing a starring role for Switzerland at the World Cup but his future at club level is uncertain.
The 25-year-old signed for the Bundesliga club in 2019 from Young Boys. He’s made 33 appearances for club and country already this season and has found the net twice for Frankfurt.
Sow has a contract in Germany until 2024. As a result, that makes his situation somewhat sticky, with clubs now monitoring the player ahead of the January transfer window.
A bid of £22 million was made for Sow by Nottingham Forest in the summer. On that occasion, they stood firm and it’s now thought that they will command a far bigger transfer fee.
Sow has been instrumental in Switzerland’s run to the last 16 of the World Cup. He has operated in midfield alongside Gunners star Granit Xhaka and Forest man Remo Freuler.
The midfield trio have brought a wonderful balance of defensive and attacking attributes to the table. They face Portugal next and will hope to send Cristiano Ronaldo packing.
Sow does look set to play for a bigger club at some point during his career. Given his form at the World Cup, perhaps that opportunity could come sooner rather than later.
Arsenal considering bid for Sow
This would be an interesting signing for Arsenal to take under consideration. Sow is an energetic midfielder and he would bring some serious depth to the Gunners’ engine room.
This season, Xhaka and Thomas Partey have struck up an unbelievable partnership. Having another player who has similar qualities, however, could be useful to Mikel Arteta.
Sow would surely jump at the chance to sign for Arsenal. He would get the chance to play in a team chasing the title and next season he would get to continue in the Champions League.
If Arsenal could get this deal over the line in January it would be a very decent piece of business. It might also be the sort of signing that Arteta needs if he’s to continue the race for the title.
