Report: Arsenal trio included in leadership group

Rob Holding, Granit Xhaka and Kieran Tierney are set to be part of a leadership group at Arsenal next season.

What’s the story?

The club’s captaincy hasn’t always gone well over the last few years.

After Unai Emery made him captain in 2019, Xhaka lasted just a few months after a run-in with fans.

The armband was handed to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

However, the centre-forward has since been criticised for his lack of leadership. Simon Jordan previously stated ‘warrior’ Tierney should take over as skipper in N5.

But, according to football.london, the Gabon international is set to keep the armband for next season.

Meanwhile, Mikel Arteta has added the trio into a leadership group for the upcoming campaign.

Leadership group won’t solve everything

A leadership group won’t mask the failures of Arsenal.

Being the captain used to be the highest of honours at any club at the start of the 21st century. However, as the years have gone on, it has taken a backseat.

Leaders used to be the players who would inspire their team on to greater things, like Patrick Vieira. Instead, one of the club’s most out-of-sorts players wears the armband.

Even when Aubameyang was banging in goals for fun, he didn’t seem the most inspirational of characters.

He was an outstanding performer, digging the north Londoners out of holes with his goal. But he wasn’t the man to guide his teammates in moments of pressure.
