Report: Arsenal told to pay over £50m if they want Martin Odegaard back

Arsenal have been told the asking price for Martin Odegaard and it looks like Real Madrid are taking quite the stance with the Norwegian.

Odegaard impressed while on loan with the Gunners this season. He joined in January, and seemed to slot in nicely to the Arsenal set-up.

However, he has since returned to Madrid and there are conflicting reports about where his future might lie. And today, Defensa Central claims that Real will ask for around £52m from Arsenal to land Odegaard full-time.

That figure would trump the sum Arsenal paid for Atletico Madrid midfielder, Thomas Partey, last summer. Sky reported that to be around the £45m mark.

Celtic fans left short-changed by Sky Sports once again

With the pandemic hitting a number of clubs’ finances, it would appear paying over £50m for Odegaard might be a stretch. Although Arteta is looking to sell a number of players, one would assume spending over £50m on one is not in the plan.

Odegaard has yet to fulfil his own potential in Madrid. Since arriving as a teenager, he’s been farmed out on loan. But he did well in Sociedad last season, prompting the Gunners to land him themselves in January.

Big asking price for Martin Odegaard means Arsenal might have to move on

Real Madrid know what they’re doing here. Drive the price up and try to start a bidding war in the hope of getting a big chunk of money.

The reality is they won’t be playing Odegaard that much. Certainly not as a main starter, unless a new manager really fancies him. Otherwise, Odegaard would have got his chance by now in Spain.

Over £50m is way too much for Arsenal to be paying here. That can be spent better elsewhere, on other areas of the pitch.

It’s a shame, but at £52m, there are better players on the market.
