French outlet Foot Mercato have claimed that Arsenal are set to reignite January interest in experienced Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng, with Chelsea also said to be keen on the German ace.
Boateng, 31, has been a warrior for Bayern Munich for the best part of a decade. Joining the club in the summer of 2011 from Manchester City, Boateng has gone on to win seven Bundesliga titles and a World Cup trophy with the national side.
However, his future at Bayern is now in doubt. His contract expires in the summer of 2021, meaning he is set to enter the final 12 months of his current deal. The likes of Javi Martinez, Benjamin Pavard and Niklas Sule are rivalling Boateng.
Now, the latest report claims Arsenal are to test bayern’s resolve in the summer, while Chelsea are also keen on the 76-time Germany international. The report does state that Bayern expect Boateng to leave the club this summer.
TBR’s view – Do Arsenal or Chelsea need to sign Boateng?
Likely to be available on the cheap, Boateng would massively improve Arsenal or Chelsea’s back line. At Stamford Bridge, Frank Lampard has a number of options in defence, but a bit of experience is needed.
The Blues do boast Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen, Kurt Zouma and Fikayo Tomori and that is a much better list of defenders than Mikel Arteta’s options. Shkodran Mustafi, David Luiz and Sokratis have all struggled this season.
With William Saliba coming to north London this summer, Arsenal need an experienced head that can go alonside the youngster and Boateng might just be perfect.
