Report: Arsenal to offer one-year extension to Wenger signing; could take vacant no. 10 shirt
Arsenal are reportedly working on offering Alexandre Lacazette a new one-year extension with the striker’s deal expiring in 12 months.
According to Football London, the club are keen to retain the 30-year-old attacker for one extra year.
Lacazette was Arsenal’s top goalscorer in all competitions last season was a reliable hitman for the north London side.
As per the report, there are suggestions that Lacazette could inherit the number 10 shirt next season. The forward wore the shirt during his best years for Lyon in Ligue 1.
However, as per the report, Arsenal will look to sell the forward this summer should he turn down the extension.
Clubs in Spain, France and Italy are keen on Lacazette.
The striker was signed by Arsene Wenger in 2017 for a then club-record fee of £46.5m according to BBC Sport.
Lacazette has made 170 appearances in all competitions for the Gunners, scoring 65 goals and assisting a further 28.
Whilst Lacazette had one of his best-ever seasons for Arsenal in the last campaign, this summer would be the best opportunity to move the attacker on.
With Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s contract expiring in 2023 and Folarin Balogun likely to have more of a first-team role next season, selling Lacazette might be a suitable way to manage the personnel of the squad.
A lack of European football next season also means there will be fewer chances for Mikel Arteta to rotate the squad.
And with Lacazette’s stock being higher than ever, the Frenchman could bring vital funds into Arsenal with the club eager to improve on other areas of the team.
