Arsenal could set to offer Eddie Nketiah a new contract with the club despite a disappointing season with the Gunners.

According to the Athletic, the Hale End academy graduate is likely to be handed a new contract with the north London side. Nketiah has been heavily linked to leaving the club this summer, with the Standard reporting that West Ham are keen on the striker.

As per the Atheltic report, it is unlikely that Nketiah will sign an extension with Arsenal given the uncertainty over how much he will actually play for the club.

A season to forget for Nketiah

The England U-21 captain had a season to forget for Arsenal despite promising signs when Mikel Arteta first arrived. Nketiah scored just twice in the Premier League last term, only making six starts.

The striker is likey to be one of many players to leave Arsenal this summer. With Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Folarin Balogun and Gabriel Martinelli all on long-term contracts, Nketiah is being earmarked to leave the club. Arsenal need to raise transfer funds this summer if they’re to make new signings.

‘Fortunate’ to start for Arsenal

Nketiah’s form last season was poor. And Arsenal legend Ian Wright revealed via Premier League Productions that the youngster was ‘fortunate’ to start one game against Everton, with Aubameyang and Lacazette both injured for that fixture.

Indeed, there’s no doubting that the England prospect has the talent to one day become a Premier League quality striker. But with numerous players ahead of him in the pecking order and just one year remaining on his current deal, Nketiah would be making the right decision for his career if he was to leave Arsenal this summer.

With West Ham interested, Nketiah won’t be short of suitors. And the 21-year-old will finally be able to find a club where he can play regular first-team football.
