Arsenal are set to intensify their efforts to sign Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimaraes, according to Goal Brasil.

The Athletico Paranaense President,  Mari Celso Petraglia confirmed interest from the Gunners recently and a firm bid could take place.

A work permit wouldn’t be an issue for the 22-year-old as he has a Spanish passport. The player was subject of a rejected £17 million bid from Benfica in the summer, with his club holding out for between £21m and £25m (Goal Brasil).

Guimaraes played 35 games last season, scoring four goals and registering three assists.

He typically operates as a central midfielder although he is capable of playing deeper in a holding role too.

Edu is the Technical Director at Arsenal and he is overseeing this transfer, alongside the club’s South American scout Sandro Orlandelli (Daily Star).

Guimaraes is extremely highly-rated. He has one cap for the Brazil under-23 outfit where he featured in the same team as Gabriel Martinelli.

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta will be keen to improve his squad this window.

His team currently lie in tenth place in the Premier League and missing out on European football is a real possibility.

If his team fail to secure a place in Europe signing players in the summer will become increasingly difficult.

Guimaraes looks to have bags of potential but he will need to realise that with a string of fine performances for the Gunners.

Arsenal have signed a lot of rubbish in recent years and those days simply have to stop.

If there are any doubts whatsoever about Guimaraes the club should move on and target a better player for their midfield engine room.
