Report: Arsenal tell Coutinho they want to sign him this summer

Arsenal have stepped up their interest in Philippe Coutinho, with Mundo Deportivo reporting that they have already told his representatives that they want the Brazilian this summer.

Coutinho has been a revelation since returning to the Premier League during the January transfer window. He has scored four goals and contributed three assists in 10 games for Aston Villa.

Recent reports claimed that Arsenal wanted Coutinho. Villa meanwhile, have the option to make his move permanent for £33.5 million.

It remains to be seen if Steven Gerrard’s men manage to keep him. However, the Gunners look to be ready to pounce if Villa do not keep Coutinho.

Mundo Deportivo reports that Arsenal have now made contact with Coutinho and informed his entourage that they plan to make a move this summer.

It is noted that Coutinho is happy in Birmingham. However, he also likes the idea of living in London. And Arsenal may well be able to offer the 29-year-old Champions League football next season.

Mundo Deportivo does suggest that Coutinho does not plan to make a decision on his future until the summer.

Arsenal must be wary of offering Coutinho eye-watering wages

The £33.5 million fee is unlikely to be a problem for Villa. And on current form, it looks to be a no-brainer to trigger that option. Gerrard described him as a ‘world-class‘ talent.

However, wages are clearly going to be a huge stumbling block.

Coutinho is reportedly on £480,000-a-week at Barcelona.

You would like to think that the playmaker would be open to taking a big pay-cut to secure a move that is good for his career. But obviously, football does not always work like that.

He will surely be open to some sort of compromise. But Arsenal should be wary of offering what would still be eye-watering terms to Coutinho.

They have been stung previously for offering lucrative deals to players who have not lived up to expectations.
