Report: Arsenal target highly-rated Ligue One and French international midfielder
The Boot Room’s round-up of Friday’s best transfer speculation concludes with Arsenal’s interest in Monaco midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia. As per the Independent, the Emirates outfit are preparing a £25 million bid for the 22-year-old, who will become a priority target if they miss out on signing Southampton’s Morgan Schneiderlin.
Arsenal’s midfield deficiencies have been well documented in recent years, and despite the impressive form Francis Coquelin has shown throughout the second half of the season, doubts still remain over his long-term suitability for the role. At 22 years of age, Kondogbia could provide the answer to this Emirates-based conundrum.
If reports are deemed true, Manchester United will seal a move for long-term Arsene Wenger target Morgan Schneiderlin, which will naturally force the London-outfit to turn their attention elsewhere. It is hard to envisage the Gunners entering a economic battle with Louis van Gaal’s Red Devils when other targets are likely to be more attainable.
Instead, Wenger is expected to turn his focus to Monaco starlet Geoffrey Kondogbia, who is also wanted by Italian giants Inter Milan. According to French football expert Julien Laurens, the Arsenal head coach is a big fan of the talented defensive midfielder.
The Gunners experienced a taste of Kondogbia’s ability over two Champions League legs this season, in which the Ligue One outfit emerged superior. The first meeting remains particularly poignant – the Frenchman scored a screamer to give Monaco a surprise lead at the Emirates, before sparking controversy as he swapped shirts with Mesut Ozil at half-time.
Have your say, would Geoffrey Kondogbia be a good signing for Arsenal?
