Report: Arsenal target available for less than £35m; ‘only a matter of time’ before he leaves

Arsenal target Sander Berge is close to leaving Sheffield United and that he could be available for less than £35m.

Norwegian outlet VG report that the 23-year-old midfielder is available this summer for less than his reported £35m release clause in his contract.

According to the Sheffield Star last month, Arsenal are keen on signing Berge but were not willing to match his release fee. The youngster joined Sheffield in 2019 for £22m as per the report.

‘Only a matter of time’

As per the VG report, it is ‘only a matter of time’ before Berge leaves Sheffield. The Norwegian international was part of the squad that finished rock bottom of the Premier League last season.

Arsenal are in the market for a new midfielder this summer. As reported by Football London, three central midfielders are close to leaving the club.

Lucas Torreira is also likely to leave Arsenal in the transfer window. But as of now, no club are close to signing the Uruguayan international, who spent last season on loan with Atletico Madrid.

Arsenal signing Berge could trigger Odegaard return

With Xhaka and Guendouzi close to leaving Arsenal, the Gunners need central midfield recruitments this window. And signing Berge could allow Mikel Arteta’s side to bring Martin Odegaard back to north London for next season.

The Real Madrid playmaker is currently looking likely to remain with the La Liga giants. However, signing an international teammate and friend of his could be a good way of convincing Odegaard to return to Arsenal. Football London report that the 22-year-old is open to the idea.

And with Berge now likely to leave Sheffield for a fee lower than his £35m release clause, Arsenal must act fast to swoop in for the Norwegian international.
