Arsenal have been left shellshocked in their attempts to land goalkeeper Andre Onana from Ajax.

The Gunners had hoped to complete a bargain deal for the man who looks resigned to leaving the Dutch giants.

Now though, Lyon are thought to be leading the race, with Onana holding a desire to play in France.

It is also thought that the 25-year-old feels he will get regular first-team football in France as opposed to signing for Arsenal.

Football London claims, however, that Arsenal are undeterred in their efforts to sign the stopper. during the current transfer window.

It seems as though Arteta will have to provide the Cameroonian with some assures about his game time, however.

In theory that shouldn’t be a problem. Bernd Leno has been linked with an exit, whilst the club doesn’t currently have a capable deputy.

Runar Runarsson is set to leave, whilst Arthur Okonkwo is extremely raw.

With that in mind, another goalkeeper is sought and it’s not unfair to say that Leno is far from undroppable.

Aaron Ramsdale is another goalkeeper in the sights of Arsenal and he could be a fallback option if a move for Onana goes south.

Arteta would be mad not to offer Onana any Arsenal assurances

There is some talk that the goalkeeper could cost as little as £7 million this summer and that would represent a steal.

He has bags of experience and will be keen to get his career back on track after a FIFA ban.

In 204 outings for Ajax, he has kept 83 clean sheets and at 25 he is still relatively young as far as being a goalkeeper is concerned.

Leno has done well for Arsenal in the past. He isn’t the messiah though and Onana would be a safer pair of hands between the posts for the Gunners.

The challenge for Arteta is convincing the stopper that he will be his permanent number one for the foreseeable.

Making the change makes sense and with Lyon sniffing around, Arsenal have to move quickly.
