Report: Arsenal star rejects offer from second club; 'given his word' to join European giants
Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka has reportedly turned down a second Serie A club to join Jose Mourinho at AS Roma.
According to CalcioMercato, the Swiss international is edging closer and closer to joining the Roman side this week.
As per the report, Xhaka has rejected an approach from a second Italian club and has ‘given his word’ to the Giallorossi that he will join them from Arsenal.
One of three midfielders to leave Arsenal this summer
Xhaka is already in Rome for this summer’s Euro competition with Switzerland, and as reported by CalcioMercato earlier this week, the deal could be completed this week.
Indeed, the 28-year-old midfielder is one of three Arsenal players in that position who could leave this window.
According to Football London, Matteo Guendouzi and Lucas Torreira are likely to depart the Emirates this summer. Moreover, the French youngster seemingly close to signing for Ligue 1 giants Marseille.
As reported by the Athletic, Ruben Neves is a potential replacement for Xhaka. Wolves are looking to sell the Portuguese midfielder for £35m this summer. Furthermore, Yves Bissouma also continues to be linked with a move to north London.
Arsenal have done well to sell Xhaka to Roma
Although the Swiss midfielder was heavily used by Mikel Arteta, there’s no question that Arsenal are making the right decision in selling Xhaka.
After a season to forget for Arsenal, wholesale change in the squad should be on the agenda at the club. And selling Xhaka to Roma is a step in the right direction.
Undoubtedly Xhaka was hit and miss during his time with the Gunners, and the north London side have to re-examine the midfield area. Indeed, with Thomas Partey getting a full pre-season this year, Arsenal have to sign a player who can accommodate the Ghana star.
